Greek labor legislation provides a comprehensive framework for the protection of employee health and the provision of medical coverage in the workplace, through specific provisions, mainly in Law 3850/2010 (Health and Safety at Work Code), and in a series of other regulations, decisions and European directives.

Employers' obligations for employee health

Law 3850/2010 – “Ranking of the Code of Laws on the Health and Safety of Workers”

Specifies that:

• The employer is obliged to ensure the health and safety of employees in every aspect related to work (Article 42).

• He is obliged to assess health risks (Article 43) and to take preventive and corrective measures.

• He must provide information and training on risks and protection measures (Article 47).

• He is obliged to have an Occupational Physician and a Safety Technician, when employing:

o ≥50 employees, regardless of sector,

o or fewer in high-risk sectors (industries, construction, etc.).

Workplace medical coverage

Occupational Physician (Articles 16–18 of Law 3850/2010)

The Occupational Physician:

• Provides preventive medicine and monitors the health of employees.

• Examines the suitability of employees for work, e.g. night shifts, pregnant women, employees with chronic diseases.

• Advises on the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

• Participates in prevention programs (e.g. vaccinations, briefings).

• DOES NOT provide therapeutic treatment – ​​its role is preventive and advisory.

Medical examinations

• The employer is obliged to provide free medical examinations related to occupational risks.

• The examinations are mandatory and take place during working hours.

Medical assistance and first aid

Article 30 – First aid, Fire safety, Evacuation

• The employer must ensure the provision of first aid and the existence of trained personnel.

• There must be first aid pharmacies, and in large enterprises, a special medical office area.

• Depending on the nature and size of the enterprise, the presence of a nurse or a rescuer is provided.

• Joint Ministerial Decree 88555/3293/1988 – Provides for the qualifications of the Occupational Physician and his obligations.
